We live in a world that is full of unrest and strife and unfortunately our frenetic news cycle means that these events are often reported on for only a few days or weeks at most. The truth is that these events continue to affect the people involved for months or even years after the news has stopped covering the issue.
Countries like Ukraine, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka are all dealing with conflict, unrest or uncertainty of some kind. At home here in Australia we have had drought, bush fires and floods along with the pandemic for more than two years.
It is good to remember that for many people here and overseas struggle and hardship are daily realities. All too easily we watch the news coverage or listen to the radio broadcasts before returning to the comfort of our own lives.
1 Timothy 2:1-2 reminds us; “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.” We should be praying for leaders and those in authority, not just in Australia, but around the world. It is good to pray for them, that they would make wise decisions on behalf of their people. So often we see the negative impacts of a leader’s unwise, corrupt or selfish decisions and so often it is the citizens of a particular country that must bear the consequences of those decisions.
Be prayerful for leaders both here in our own country and around the world. We may feel that our world is facing many significant problems but we worship the Sovereign God and this should give us hope and comfort amid the chaos.
